Inquiry into Science

Nature Of Science
understanding about science, investigating science, communicating in science, participating and contributing.

Living World
During this unit the students will be exploring how different water ways, such as rivers, lakes and the coastline have had an affect on people and their activities.   This focus will be explored over time from past to present.   Below you can find some resources to help develop ideas about the Tai Tokerau,  Northland region.

We had a question that came from a student about mangroves.   One student said they were important because they are a part of Northland and therefore they are linked to our unit of inquiry.   Below is a little video,  just over a minute long about why mangroves are important.

This video below is another example of how people in Tai Tokerau use this special region of New Zealand.

Keeping in touch with our beaches.  This website tells us a little more about the quality of our beaches for swimming.

Plants
During this unit we had a side inquiry into composting and zero waste. We inquired into what a good compost is and what plants get from compost.
  • Life processes - recognise that all living things have certain requirements so they can stay alive
  • Ecology - recognise that living things are suited to their particular habitat.
  • Evolution - recognise that there are lots of different living things in the world and that they can be grouped in different ways
